A review of (Open Virtual Machine Format) OVF from a systems management perspective

I finally took a look at (Open Virtual Machine Format) OVF, the virtual machine distribution specification that was recently submitted to DMTF.
The document is authored by VMware and XenSource, but they are joined
in the submission to DMTF by some other biggies, namely Microsoft, HP,
IBM and Dell.

Goal-Driven Development

It’s always amazing to see how people find it hard to compromise, to
nuance their opinions about things. And I’m probably the first one
finding it hard. But when it comes to software practices, boy it’s
annoying.
I was talking to a colleague of mine the other day, we were talking
about unit testing and other best practices, and I boldly and
shamelessly said to him: “I haven’t written...

Code Complete Doesn't Mean You're Done

Joe Coder runs through his feature in the UI. It works. The doodad renders beautifully on the screen, and when he clicks the button, all the right things happen on the server. He checks his code in, writes a quick comment in Jira, changes the issue status to “Completed & Checked-in”, and goes to his next task. Lo and behold, his To Do list is empty! Joe’s done coding!

Groovy (and Ruby) Only Solves Half the Problem

It is with some dismay I've been reading the latest Groovy discussions
on Javalobby. I've spent quite some time learning Scala, so it bothered
me a bit that I minded another competing language a spot in the
limelight. Why would I care? To me as a consultant, language
fragmentation is great.

The Mission of a Software Architect

Recently, I read Steven Devijver's The YAGNI Argument (You Ain't Gonna Need It) and found a link to one of Martin Fowler's IEEE articles Who needs an Architect? in it. What I didn't know was that this article was 5 years old and was impressed by how up to date the statements were. It led me to start thinking: What is the Mission of a Software Architect?

This article discusses the reasoning as to why India should adopt a "Product Development" strategy to give a further boost to it's software exports. India has so far only been recognized with excellent talent pool in various consulting houses. It's time India starts it journey towards Software Product Development.

9 Signs You Shouldn't Hire THAT Web Guy

My employer specializes in creating websites for middle-sized businesses. We rarely create "Mom'n'Pops" websites and generally don't pursue contracts with major corporations. Working with mid-size business has given me the opportunity to speak with executives and "decision-makers" within each business. Our discussions eventually end up with the other person telling me about...

Will Eclipse RCP ever be used for more than the IDE and for making nerd applications?

The Eclipse RCP is a framework for client applications that has clearly been used with great success to support the IDE itself, but when it comes to building other applications the picture is not necessarily as clear.
What If... DZone had a Reality TV series???

What if there was a reality TV show that featured everyday programmers/software developers like you and me? It could give the rest of the world a glimpse into our jobs and see that the stereotypes are true, but they could also see that a sizable majority of folks in this profession are actually pretty normal.
